The sovereignty of God
The God of the Bible reigns. This study considers who God is — one God in three persons, holy, wise, and all-powerful — and what it means that nothing in all creation lies outside His sovereign rule.
“Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.” — Psalm 115:3
One God in three persons
Scripture teaches that there is one God (Deuteronomy 6:4), who eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each is fully God, yet there is one God, not three. This mystery — the Trinity — is not a contradiction but a truth beyond full comprehension, revealed throughout Scripture and displayed supremely in the work of salvation.
This triune God is perfect in every attribute: holy, righteous, wise, good, loving, and glorious. To know Him rightly is the aim of all theology and the joy of the believer forever.
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.” — Deuteronomy 6:4
He reigns over all things
God’s sovereignty means He rules over everything — creation, nations, history, nature, and the details of every life. Nothing happens by accident or outside His purpose. He “works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Ephesians 1:11). This includes even the free choices of people and the hardest circumstances of our lives.
This truth humbles our pride and steadies our fears. The God who controls all things is the same God who loves His children and works all things for their good (Romans 8:28).

Sovereignty and human responsibility
Scripture affirms both that God is absolutely sovereign and that human beings are genuinely responsible for their choices. We may not fully reconcile these, but the Bible holds them together without embarrassment — as at the cross, which was both the deliberate plan of God and the guilty act of sinful men (Acts 2:23).
Wisdom holds both truths firmly rather than collapsing one into the other. God’s sovereignty does not erase our responsibility, and our responsibility does not limit His sovereignty.
