The authority and sufficiency of Scripture

Scripture claims a divine origin: it is “breathed out by God” (2 Timothy 3:16), carried along by the Holy Spirit through human authors (2 Peter 1:20–21). This means the Bible is not merely a human record of encounters with God, nor a book that merely contains God’s Word here and there. It is the Word of God, down to its words.

Because God cannot lie or err, His Word is true and trustworthy in all it affirms. This is the doctrine of inspiration and inerrancy — and it is the foundation for everything else a Christian believes.

“Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” — 2 Peter 1:21

If the Bible is God’s Word, then it carries God’s authority. It stands over every other voice — tradition, experience, feeling, reason, and culture. When Scripture speaks, God speaks, and the matter is settled. The believer’s task is not to sit in judgment over the Word but to submit to it.

This does not make us anti-intellectual; it makes us rightly ordered. Every authority has its place, but only one is final. To make anything else the final court — even good things — is to displace God Himself.

“The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.” — Psalm 119:160

Scripture is not only true and authoritative; it is enough. It contains everything necessary for salvation and for a life that pleases God (2 Peter 1:3). We do not need new revelations, secret knowledge, or additional authorities to supplement it. The man of God is made “complete, equipped for every good work” by the Scriptures alone.

This is deeply freeing. You are not waiting on some further word; God has given you what you need. The task is not to find more, but to know, believe, and obey what He has already spoken.
