Sharing your faith: a starting point

Many Christians want to share their faith but feel unequipped, afraid, or unsure where to begin. If that’s you, take heart: evangelism is not a gift for the eloquent few but a joy and duty for every believer — and it is far simpler than you may think. You are not called to argue anyone into the kingdom or to have every answer. You are called to point people to Jesus.

This starting point will help you replace fear with confidence: understanding what the Gospel is, what your role is (and isn’t), and how to take a genuine first step. God does the saving; He simply calls you to be a faithful, loving witness.

“And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”” — Mark 16:15

Before you share the Gospel, be sure you can state it simply. The Gospel is the good news that God is holy, that we are sinners separated from Him, that Jesus Christ — God the Son — lived a sinless life, died in the place of sinners, and rose again, and that all who repent and trust in Him are saved by grace, not by works. You cannot share clearly what you cannot state clearly. Get the Gospel firmly in your own mind and heart first — it is the message everything else serves.

“For I delivered to you as of first importance... that Christ died for our sins.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3

Evangelism is simply telling the good news — heralding what God has done in Christ. It is not your job to convert anyone; only God saves (John 6:44). It is not winning arguments, being pushy, or having all the answers. That truth removes enormous pressure: you are a witness telling what you have seen and heard, not a salesman closing a deal.

When you understand that results belong to God, you are freed to be faithful, honest, and loving — and to leave the outcome in far more capable hands than your own.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” — Romans 10:17

You don’t need a theology degree to say what Christ has done for you. Like the man born blind — “though I was blind, now I see” (John 9:25) — your testimony is a powerful and accessible starting place. Learn to tell it simply in three parts: your life before Christ, how you came to Him, and the difference He has made.

Pair your story with the Gospel itself, so that people hear not only what happened to you but the message that can save them too.

“Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.” — Mark 5:19

The hardest part is beginning. Start by praying — for boldness, and for specific people who need Christ. Then take one small, concrete step: a caring question, an invitation, a word of testimony. God delights to use ordinary, willing believers, and He gives boldness to those who ask (Acts 4:29–31).

You will grow more comfortable as you go. Faithfulness, not perfection, is the goal — and every faithful step is used by God.
